April 3, 2014 – On March 6th 2014, the Royal Dutch Mint has issued the first 5 and 10 euro commemorative coins of 2014, in honour of 200 years de Nederlandsche Bank. The coin is issued by the Ministry of Finance, and was struck by the Royal Dutch Mint. The ‘de Nederlandsche Bank’ five euro coin was designed by Michael Guilfoyle and is available in several issues.

The “de Nederlandsche Bank” five euro coin
One of King Willem I’s first official actions after assuming the throne was to found de Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) in 1814. His goal was to facilitate economic growth. Ensuring financial stability is still DNB’s primary purpose, even after 200 years. It focuses on three areas: monetary policy, payment transactions, and supervision.

Design
The “de Nederlandsche Bank” five euro coin was designed by Michael Guilfoyle. The commemorative coin features several references to bank notes, like a refined calligraphy pattern that used to serve as a security measure for bank notes. In addition, texts have been added that are invisible to the naked eye, using Microtext. The “de Nederlandsche Bank” five euro coin is a piece of graphic art offering us a glimpse of our monetary history, as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Dutch Bank.

The issues
The “de Nederlandsche Bank” five euro coin will be available:
- In circulation quality in a coin card after the ceremonial First Strike, at all participating PostNL locations and online (see link below).
- In special collector’s editions and a unique silver colour set.
- As a coin roll of 20 commemorative coins in circulation quality.
- Silver-plated, in BU quality.
- In the silver “de Nederlandsche Bank” Color Set containing three Silver Proof coins with colour, as well as three coloured silver miniature bank notes of 10, 25 and 50 guilders. The coin colours correspond with the bank note colours.
