Italy marks Presidency of the Council of the European Union with coin

November 20, 2014 – Since the 1st of July 2014 Italy has taken over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. This function rotates every six month among the member states. In occasion of that event the Italian Mint has issued a 5 euro silver coin in SU.

Italy / 5 EUR / 925 silver / 18g / 32mm / Design: Annalisa Masini / Mintage: 5,000.

On the obverse of the coin the bust of Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, taken from the frescoes painted by Raphael in the Villa Farnesina in Rome.
On the reverse is represented a detail from a painting by Veronese, the Rape of Europa, kept in the Capitoline Museums in Rome.
