Kenya short of coins?

January 15, 2013 – Although the Central Bank of Kenya denies it appears that the country is suffering of coin shortage as medias reported at the end of November 2012. It is unclear what the exact causes are, though.
Maybe institutions are preparing to comply the currency with the new 2010 constitution. Until now the coins depict the head of state while the new constitution states that no individual may be shown on the coins. The Central Bank, though, declines any rumour of injecting new coins after having put into circulation twenty-one million new coins only last year. However, kiosks and banks are reported to withdraw or not accept certain denominations of coins aggravating the situation by doing so.

You can read an article on the topic at the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation.
