September 5, 2013 – The Ottawa Numismatic Society, which regroups money collectors of the Canada’s national capital region, is proud to announce that its journal, ‘moneta’, has won two prestigious awards, Best Local Newsletter from the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) and first place in the American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) Outstanding Local Publication Contest, thus making it the best in North America.
“We’re over the moon,” said Steve Woodland, president of the Society and one of the assistant-editors of the journal, “We’re very proud of this accomplishment.”
Published since 2010, moneta is an electronic, bilingual (English and French) publication that covers all areas of money collecting – coins, tokens, medals, bank notes, etc. – and always has an article or two for the novice. The texts are always illustrated with large color images so that the reader can fully appreciate the beauty of the item shown.
Although moneta has won each of these awards previously, this is the first time it has taken top honors for both in the same year. The publication won first place in the ANA’s competition with its 2010 volume, while the next year its 2011 volume took top spot in RCNA, along with second place in the ANA. All this in moneta’s first three years of publication.
When asked about the key to the success of the publication, senior editor Serge Pelletier said “Passion and a great team of editors and writers. Half of last year’s authors have won numismatic literary awards (many for an article published in moneta), and they can all tell a great story!”
“moneta’s dual victory is a credit to the Ottawa Numismatic Society, especially to their editor, Serge Pelletier, whose hard work, dedication, and persistence made this a win-win-win situation; for the club, the RCNA, and the numismatic hobby,” said William Waychison, president of the RCNA, when he presented the award at the Association’s annual convention held in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in July 2013. “It is wonderful to see that a small team of part-time volunteers can produce such a high-quality journal; last year’s journal totaled 380 pages, and that’s without the ads!” added Waychison.
