November 19, 2015 – Aiming to create a tool that provides a global analysis of patterns of coinage circulation, Hoard Analysis Research Project (HARP) is a new three-year research grant funded by the National Science Foundation which will measure distance between mints and hoards and compare them to geographical maps, allowing for a greater comprehension of economic, cultural and/or political affinities within the circulation patterns. Initially the research will focus on Archaic and Classical period hoards, then with further data sets, it can be applied to other types such as Roman and Byzantine.
The research team comprises Dr. Peter van Alfen, ANS Curator of Greek Coins, Alain Bresson, specialist on ancient Greek economics and professor at the University of Chicago, and, Walter Shandruk, a University of Chicago graduate student (Classics) who is writing his dissertation on ancient amulets and is a computing and network analysis expert.
