November 21, 2013 – The New York International Numismatic Convention will sponsor its 42nd annual edition January 3-12, 2014 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, located at 301 Park Avenue, between 49th and 50th Streets.

Kevin Foley, Bourse Chairman for the convention said, “There are three main components of the NYINC, the auctions, our bourse area and our educational programs. Auction lot viewing will open on Friday, January 3. Heritage Auctions, of Dallas, Texas, will hold auction sessions on Sunday and Monday, January 5 and 6. They’ll be followed by Classical Numismatic Group, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. CNG’s sessions will be during the morning and afternoon, Tuesday and Wednesday, January 7 and 8. Freeman and Sear, of Los Angeles, will hold a single session on the evening of Tuesday, January 7. A collaborative effort between Dmitry Markov, Baldwin’s and M&M Numismatics will sponsor sessions on the evenings of Wednesday and Thursday, January 8 and 9. Irvine California’s Stack’s-Bowers-Ponterio will follow with sessions on the evenings of Friday and Saturday, January 10 and 11. Kolbe and Fanning will conduct a two session auction of numismatic books and literature on the afternoon of Saturday, January 11. Chicago’s Gemini Auctions will round out the auction presentations with a session on the afternoon of Sunday, January 12.”

Foley said of the auctions, “In all we’ll have 16 separate auction sessions presented over eight days by nine different auction companies. Some incredible rarities have found new homes in the past at our NYINC auctions. I fully expect a repeat at our 42nd Annual NYINC and anticipate that between $40,000,000 and $50,000,000 worth of numismatic material will be hammered down as part of our auctions. The eight days of auctions that the NYINC offers is simply an experience that can’t be matched.”

He also added, “But the auctions are just the beginning, our 120 dealer bourse area will feature the leading specialists in world and ancient numismatics, hailing from roughly 20 states and a dozen foreign countries. The bourse will get underway on Thursday, January 9 from 12noon until 7PM for our Professional Preview and Early Bird Day. In return for a $100 registration fee dealers without booths, as well as collectors, will be able to gain access to the bourse area a full day in advance of the general public. We typically have 150-200 people register for the preview. The excitement and intensity is very plain to see throughout Thursday afternoon. A word of warning for the safety of our attendees. Don’t be standing idly by at the entrance when the Professional Preview opens at noon on Thursday. There is a real surge to gain access and one doesn’t want to be blocking the way. Our booth holders know that the preview participants are especially serious in their interests and generally hold back special items to unveil at the NYINC. Likewise, our preview registrants know that they’ll have access to dealers and inventory items they are unlikely to encounter at any other numismatic event in the United States. The result is always an especially active bourse area.”

The general public hours will be Friday and Saturday from 10AM until 7PM and Sunday from 10AM until 3PM. There is a $10 registration fee, good for a pass valid all three days. A $5 admission discount coupon valid Friday through Sunday can be printed out from the NYINC website. The website also contains the full Schedule of Events, a dealer listing, both alphabetically and by booth number, as well as contact information for the NYINC auction companies. The bourse, auction viewing and auction sessions, as well as the NYINC educational programs will all take place on the 18th floor meeting room level of the Waldorf-Astoria.

NYINC educational programs on Saturday will include Mike Gasvoda, speaking on “The Mysterious Coinage of Magna Graecia”. A four hour session for Young Numismatists will get underway at 11AM, conducted by Chris Donato. An 11AM meeting of the Association of Dedicated Byzantine Collectors will feature an audience participation discussion, “My Favorite Emperor and Why”. John Adams will talk at 12noon on “The Louis XV ‘Honos et Virtu” and George II Indian Peace Medals: Competition and Propaganda in the French and Indian War”. Peter van Alfen will speak at 1PM on “Who Decides? Problems of Archaic Monetary Authority in Teos-Abdera and Phokaia-Velia”. Dr. Ira Rezak will present a 2PM program about “French Medals: A Collector’s Choice, while Carlos Jara’s 3PM lecture will be “Iturbide’s Coinage in Central America”. David Vagi will speak at 4PM on “A Revised Chronology for Rome’s First Silver Coin”. A 5PM meeting of the Oriental Numismatic Society will feature a panel discussion during which audience questions will be answered by a group of numismatic experts. The NYINC educational offerings will conclude at 8PM with a presentation by His Majesty Alanus I the sitting monarch of the Kingdom of Bermania. His Majety’s topic will be “The First Jesuit in Bermania”.

Foley said of the NYINC programs, “Our Speakers have devoted a lifetime of study to their numismatic specialty areas. Saturday afternoon at the NYINC can be like a graduate level seminar in world and ancient numismatics for those who take advantage of our presentations. I encourage everyone who comes to pick at least one.”

Room reservations are available at the Waldorf-Astoria event site by calling (212) 355-3000 and asking for rate code “NYQ” or “NYX” for rates beginning at $279 or $309. Bourse Chairman Foley said of the host hotel, “The Waldorf is like something out of another era and is the definition of quiet elegance. Staying at the Waldorf is, quite simply, part of the overall experience of attending the NYINC. There are any number of deals that get underway just because of a chance encounter in one of the hotel’s dining outlets or in the lobby area. I hope that our out of town attendees will avail themselves of the Waldorf’s special brand of hospitality.

Although the NYINC bourse is sold out, Foley is accepting applications from dealers in world and ancient numismatics to be placed on the waiting list. He can be contacted via email.
