June 5, 2014 – The Perth Mint is as productive as ever and releases a number of new coins, among them new issues in the “Land Down Under”, the “Koala” and the “Mother’s Love” series.

2014 The Land Down Under – Great Barrier Reef 5oz Silver & 2oz Gold Proof Coins

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Stretching 344,000 square kilometres along the coast of Queensland in the country’s north east, it attracts more than 1.6 million visitors annually who swim, snorkel, dive and sail on the thriving masterpiece. Featuring a stunning array of coral in bright and beautiful colours and a breathtaking variety of marine creatures, from microscopic plankton to whales weighing more than 100 tonnes, the reef offers some of the most spectacular maritime scenery on Earth.

Struck by The Perth Mint from 5oz of 99.9 per cent pure silver and 2oz 99.99 per cent pure gold in proof quality, both coins are issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. The Perth Mint will release no more than 400 of the 5oz silver proof coins and 200 2oz gold proof coins.

2014 Young Collectors Superpowers Series Invisibility $1 Coin

The 2014 Young Collectors Superpowers series features six coins, each of which portrays an imaginative and exciting design to represent a superpower, with the second exciting release featuring the power of invisibility.
A great gift for any budding young collector, the coin is housed in a presentation card which has fantastic illustrations and information about the body’s senses.
The coin is struck from aluminium bronze and is issued as Australian legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, and has an unlimited mintage.

2014 Australian Sovereign Gold Proof

The discovery of payable gold in the colony of New South Wales in 1851 lay behind the establishment of the Sydney branch of the Royal Mint, which opened on 14 May 1855. The Sydney Mint produced its first Type I sovereign, featuring a unique ‘colonial’ design, on 23 June.
There ensued an unbroken 76-year history of gold sovereign production in Australia. Over 400 million coins were created in Sydney, and at Royal Mint branches opened later in Melbourne and Perth. From 1871 the coins featured Imperial designs with the addition of ‘S’, ‘M’ or ‘P’ mintmarks respectfully, to identify their place of manufacture. The various combinations of these features and monarchs means that today’s collectors must find almost 200 different Australian sovereigns to complete a set.
Customising the original Sydney Mint Sovereign to read Perth Mint, this coin represents a modern adaptation of this important part of Australia’s history.
Made with meticulous attention to detail, the 2014 coin is struck from traditional 91.67% pure gold (22-carat) in supreme proof quality. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, no more than 1,500 of these 2014 Australian Sovereign Gold Proof Coins will be released by The Perth Mint.

2014 Australia Koala 1 Kilo Silver Proof

The koala is a well-known marsupial of Australia. Being nocturnal, this unique animal takes refuge from the harsh southern sun and is able to graze on gum leaves by living in eucalypt forests.
Although they live in societies, individual koalas are territorial of their home range of trees, which provide them with food, shelter and places for social contact.
Struck from 1 kilo of 99.9% pure silver in proof quality, The Perth Mint will release no more than 500 of these 2014 Australian Koala 1 Kilo Silver Proof Coins.
This coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

2014 Australian Kookaburra 1 oz Silver Proof High Relief Coin

The Australian Kookaburra high relief coin is a prestigious and limited offering from The Perth Mint. The coin features delightful original artistry and is struck from 99.9 per cent pure silver in proof quality.
Kookaburras are best known for their unmistakable call, which sounds uncannily like loud, echoing human laughter.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, The Perth Mint will release no more than 9,000 2014 Australian Kookaburra 1oz Silver Proof High Relief Coins in this packaging out of a maximum mintage of 10,000.

2014 Mother’s Love – Asian Elephant 1/2 oz Silver Proof Coin

The second coin from the Mother’s Love series features a mother Asian elephant and her calf.
Displaying a special bond, the mother and her calf move together among other related females and their young, under the direction of a matriarch. The mother dedicates all of her time and love to her calf, and will only give birth again after her first born has been weaned.
Highly protective, and ever conscious of her baby’s wellbeing, an Asian elephant mother will charge fiercely at any threat to her young calf.
Struck by The Perth Mint from 1/2oz of 99.9 per cent pure silver in proof quality, the coin is issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu.
