Numismatic Training Days in England

September 8, 2016 – Some numismatic training events are coming up in England organised by the Money and Medals Network. They give basic information on Roman coin identification or HLF-funded collections management. Attendance is free so check out!

East Midlands Money and Medals training day

9th September 2016, University of Nottingham Museum, 10:00-16:00
The second event held by the East Midlands network will focus on numismatic outreach subjects as well has having an emphasis on coinage of the Ancient Mediterranean to tie in with the museum’s current spotlight exhibition ‘A Greek in Egypt’. This diverse event will feature speakers from the University of Nottingham Museum, Museum Development North West, Gunnersbury Park Museum, York Museums Trust and the British Museum. In addition to a talk on the conservation of coins and medals, the day will include a handling session of Greek and Roman coins. West Midlands Roman coin identification training

14th September 2016, Department of Classics and Ancient History, University of Warwick, 10:00-16:00
The first follow-up event of the newly formed West Midlands numismatic network will focus on the identification of Roman coinage. Led by the Warwick University Classics Department’s Dr Stanley Ireland, who coordinates the WM network, the event will feature an introduction to the history of Roman coinage and will cover different denominations as well as allowing attendees to test their identification skills during a handling session. This training will be useful for anyone who may need to respond to public enquiries about Roman coins as well as cataloguing coins on a museum database. Anyone who wants to learn about Roman coins or support this local network would be welcome to attend. Attendance is FREE and lunch will be provided. Places can be booked by emailing Stanley Ireland directly.

British Museum HLF-funded collections management training

September 2016, the British Museum
The British Museum is offering a number of collections management training courses which are FREE to attend. These skills sharing sessions are part of the British Museum’s National Partnerships skills sharing activity, and have been made possible through the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund. One of the events focuses on numismatics and is being run in partnership with the ACE-supported Money and Medals Network and represents the first such event to be held in London. Please note that places are limited so booking early is advisable, and a limited number of travel bursaries are available per session.

South West Money and Medals training day

21st October 2016, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, 10:00-16:00
The Money and Medals Network will be coming to the South West for the first time with a Stage 1 training event focusing on numismatic storage, display, documentation and identification. Details for this free event are still being finalised and more information will be available very soon.
