On 1 January 1993 two new states – the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic – were established as a result of the division of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic. On the same day Národná banka Slovenska was also established. When the Slovak Republic joined the European Union on 1 May 2004, Národná banka Slovenska became a member of the European System of Central Banks, and with the introduction of the euro on 1 January 2009 it became part of the Eurosystem.

During the course of its existence, Národná banka Slovenska has become a well-respected institution and has been instrumental in stabilising the Slovak economy. In cooperation with the European Central Bank and central banks of other euro area countries, the primary objective of NBS is to maintain price stability in the euro area. In addition to implementing the common monetary policy, it issues euro banknotes and euro coins, supervises banks and other institutions of the Slovak financial sector, ensures the smooth functioning of payment systems, and regulates currency circulation.
