July 26, 2012 – The Singapore Mint has unveiled its newest collection of commemorative coins, struck in celebration of Singapore’s 47 years of independence. For the first time, The Singapore Mint is producing a heart-shaped coin in the collection, launched on 11 July 2012, a month before Singapore’s National Day. Collectors are able to pre-order the coins from 11 July onwards from The Singapore Mint, or they can add the coins to their collection after 3 August 2012 when the coins become available for purchase at The Singapore Mint’s outlets and via the online website.

Singapore / 2 dollars / Cupro-nickel / 20.00 g / 38.70 mm / Mintage: 6,000.

“National Day not only celebrates our independence, but commemorates how our country has progressed and prospered, as a united people building a better future. The significance of National Day is close to the heart of many Singaporeans, and the heart-shaped design for this year’s commemorative coin takes the cue from the logo of the 47th National Day Parade celebrations in which a heart-shape is distinctly featured,” says Mr Yip Pak Ling, Mint Director, The Singapore Mint.

Singapore / 5 dollars / .999 silver / 31.10 g / 42.87 x 39.47 / Mintage: 5,000.

The collection includes a circular $2 Proof-Like Colour Coin in Cupro-Nickel and a heart-shaped $5 proof coin in 999 Fine Silver. A ‘folded-ribbon’ logo depicting the number ‘47’ representing the years of independence is prominently featured on the top left corner of both the $2 and $5 coins, along with the official 47th National Day Parade logo and slogan ‘Loving Singapore, Our Home’.

The main visual feature of the coins depicts four children representing the four main ethnic races of Singapore, running happily and reaching for the skies, symbolically representing Singapore’s multicultural people living harmoniously and working together to achieve their lofty ideals. The Float@Marina Bay is also featured in the background of the coins with Singapore’s distinctive skyline. The $2 coin is accented by a silver-ring design underlying the visuals to signify the united spirit and determination to succeed, and a blue half-tone background in the $5 coin to complement the heart shape design of the coin and represent the love and pride Singaporeans hold for their country. In addition, 2,012 sets from the total mintage have been packaged in a limited edition heart-shaped box for collectors as a two-coin set.
