Stockholm’s Royal Coin Cabinet is relocated to the Swedish History Museum

January 26, 2017 – On 12 January 2017 we reported on the current closing of Sweden’s Royal Coin Cabinet. Now the director informs us that the cabinet is relocated to the Swedish History Museum. It will certainly reopen presumably in spring 2019. Please read the director’s letter:

We have just seen the article in Coins Weekly about The Royal Coin Cabinet. We are moved by the support and engagement from numismatists and other professionals around the world regarding the future of the Royal Coin Cabinet.

We have also noted that the discussions about the museum need some clarification.
The Royal Coin Cabinet is not closing down, it is relocating. The central agency National Historical Museums has decided to move the Royal Coin Cabinet from the current address to the same building as the Swedish History Museum. The reason is primarily economic and the purpose is to be able to allocate more resources to core tasks, such as research, public offers and managing the collections. Today the museum is located in a commercial building and rental costs are increasing.

Until 31 March 2017 the museum is open as usual with school visits, tours, lectures and family activities. After this date we are gradually closing the exhibitions. The last chance to visit the museum before the move is in August 2017.

During the period January 2017 to spring 2019 we are unable to handle loans- or photo requests. Research visits, including work with objects from the collections, can be made until the 31 March 2017 after prior contact with the museum.

We regret the inconvenience and restrictions this may cause. We look forward to resume our activities and welcome visitors to our new premises and new exhibitions during 2019.

Best regards,
Eva Ramberg, Director, Royal Coin Cabinet
Maria Jansén, Director general
