January 26, 2012 – Tony Abramson’s symposia in early medieval and medieval coinage have now become a firm fixture in the numismatic calendar of events. The 2012 event on 31 March returns to splendid surroundings of the Fitzwilliam Museum and the collegiate charms of Cambridge.
The programme includes two speakers from the USA and two from the Continent. The first session is a tribute to the prolific career of Mark Blackburn, tragically cut short. Other sessions reveal the latest findings in the rapidly developing fields of early Anglo-Saxon, Northumbrian and Continental coinages of the Conversion Period as well as Viking hoards.
Speakers are selected not only to reflect the international nature of interest in this era, but to present papers on current research by leading authorities, whilst affording an opportunity to encourage new-comers.
The evening before the symposium is a social opportunity, where colleagues from every aspect of the subject meet – curators and collectors, detectorists and archaeologists, speakers and numismatists.
