Volker Heuchert appointed Assistant Keeper at the Ashmolean

December 20, 2012 – German-British numismatist Volker Heuchert has been working at Oxford University since many years and has established his reputation particularly as collaborator to the Roman Provincial Coinage project.

Since ten years Volker Heuchert has been working at the Ashmolean Museum of Oxford University as Collections Manager of the Heberden Coin Room. Now he has changed there to the position of Assistant Keeper for Roman and Greek Imperial Coins.

Volker Heuchert was involved in redesigning the coin cabinet – storing some 350,000 coins – as Collections Manager already. He was responsible, in particular, for the late Roman collection and for three permanent displays in the Money Gallery. Beside his work in the museum Volker Heuchert is teaching numismatics at Oxford University and has published widely on the chronological development of Roman provincial coin iconography.
Additionally it is also thanks to him that over 46,000 coins can be searched online through the website Roman Provincial Coinage. The impressive number of visits tells of the project’s importance: during the six years of its existence more than 125,000 visitors have accessed the database!

First Volker Heuchert studied in Germany where he took a doctoral degree in ancient history. Yet in this research he integrated a numismatic approach. After these studies he went to Oxford where he had previously stayed during a visit abroad. He did another PhD, this time, however, dedicating himself to a purely numismatic topic studying the coinage of the Roman province of Asia under the Antonines.

CoinsWeekly is very glad about these news and congratulates Volker Heuchert on his new position! We are looking forward to his future publications and projects.
