Zimbabwe asking to purchase Rand

January 15, 2013 – In 2009 Zimbabwe abandoned its own currency due to economical struggles.  Since then US dollars and South African Rand are used among others although reportedly the newly designed South African banknotes met resistance in Zimbabwe due to the portrait of former president Nelson Mandela.
Currently Zimbabwe is asking the South African Reserve Bank if it may purchase South African money for use in commerce. Not being a member of the Common Monetary Area, though, the country has still to expect an answer that will be taken on the highest level.
