November 7, 2013 – The ministry of Finance in The Hague has just revealed the design for the national side of the new Dutch Euro coins. The new euro coins featuring the portrait of King Willem-Alexander will be brought into circulation from the second half of January 2014. Euro coins for 1 and 2 eurocents will not be brought into circulation but will be part of the collectors’ sets.

The new euro coins were designed by photographer Erwin Olaf. King Willem-Alexander’s characteristic faceted portrait is based on the Dutch parceled landscape, and also symbolizes the diverse nature of our country in current times. The design also represents modern-day Kingship.

The Royal Dutch Mint will include the new euro coins in several collectors’ sets (including the BU set for the Netherlands 2014, Proof set for the Netherlands 2014, and the Abdication Set part 2). The 2014 assortment will be issued in early January – the different issues can be ordered from that moment onwards. Mintages and prices for the different sets are unavailable as of yet.

The Royal Dutch Mint expects the coins to be made available and brought into circulation from the second half of January 2014, subject to conditions of issue and formal approval.
Besides the coins meant for circulation, the new coins might also be included in a set for national distribution. Set subject to conditions of issue and formal approval. Should the set indeed be issued, it will also be made available for wholesale.
