2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Celebrated on British Virgin Islands Coin

July 12, 2018 – On 15 July 2018, football fans from around the world will be watching the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. To celebrate this world-renowned competition, the British Virgin Islands has approved the release of a stunning new coin which has been produced in conjunction with MDM, Germany.

The design on the reverse of the coin shows two footballers tackling for the ball. The 2018 FIFA World Cup™ Marks appear on the coin tying in elements to represent football along with symbols of Russian folk art and including a symbolic star for the championship. The main design is surrounded by a dome which leads to an image of St George, who is the Patron Saint of Russia, slaying the dragon. In the stunning color version of the coin the dome, the star, St George and the dragon are colored to enhance the design on the coin. The obverse of the coin carries an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II which is exclusive to Pobjoy Mint. A silver version of the coin has also been produced which is available exclusively to MDM, Germany.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup is the first World Cup hosted by a European country for 12 years and the first ever to be held in Eastern Europe. 32 national teams started off in the final tournament – the 31 teams who made it through the qualifying competitions and the team of the host nation who qualify automatically. At the end of the competition, a total of 64 matches will have been played in 12 venues across Russia. The long-awaited World Cup Final will take place on July 15, 2018 at the Luzhniki Stadium.

In 2017 already, FIFA invited the Royal Mint of Spain to participate in the official collector coin program of the 2018 World Cup. For this event, the mint issued one silver coin and one gold coin, both depicting the effigy of H.M. the King Felipe VI on the obverse.
