Coins and Historical Medals at Dix Noonan Webb’s Live Auction

On 13 and 14 March 2018 Dix Noonan Webb will be holding their Live Online Auction of Coins and Historical Medals with room bidding available at their London offices starting at 11.00 am. 

Lot 1034. India, Mysore, Haidar Ali, Mohur, Bahadurpatan [later Seringapatam], yr. 15 [of Shah Alam II], 10.95g/10h (Ganesh 13.1; KM. 6; F 1343). About extremely fine, exceptionally rare; the first Mohur-sized gold coin struck by the rulers of Mysore. Estimate: 10,000-15,000 GBP.

The focus is mainly on British and Islamic coins featuring various special collections.

Lot 1222. British Historical Medals, London, [Newgate], Christ’s Hospital, Mathematical School, 1673, a silver medal by J. Roettier, double defined image, a pentagono ad lineam rectam introrsvm pro qvadrato, rev. a qvadrato ad lineam rectam exreosvm, single defined image, 56mm, 68.31g (MI I, 559/222; cf. DNW 143, 37). Some scuffing, otherwise very fine and toned, an extremely rare mule of two reverses. From the Collection Formed by the Late T.h. Watts. Estimate: 300-360 GBP.

The collection of British educational award medals was formed by the late T.H. Watts a schoolmaster himself, who appears to have been most active in acquiring pieces in the 1950s and early 1960s.

Lot 80. British Coins. Charles I (1625-1649), Exeter mint, Halfcrown, Gp III, 1644, mm. rose, clumsy horseman, no groundline below, rev. oval scroll-garnished shield, mint-mark divides date, 14.27g/4h (Bull 664/30; Besly M30; SCBI Brooker 1047, this coin; N 2564; S 3074). About very fine and toned, very rare. From the Collection of the Late Dr John Hulett (Part IV). Estimate: 2,000-2,600 GBP.

Lot 981. France: Carolingians, Eudes (887-98), Denier, Bourges, gratia dei rex, monogram, rev. bitvrices civita, cross, 1.58g/5h (MG 1328). About very fine, rare. From the Collection of the Late Tony Merson (Part IV). Estimate: 200-300 GBP.
