Central States Plans Civil War Educational Forum at 75th Anniversary Convention of CSNS

August 29, 2013 – The 2014 Convention of the Central States Numismatic Society (CSNS) is a very special one, celebrating the society’s diamond jubilee. It features not only the traditional big bourse, but has a particularly strong lineup of Civil War researchers with presentations on a broad array of Civil War era related topics. The convention, with a Civil War Educational Forum as one of its features, is scheduled for April 21-26, 2014 at the Schaumburg Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center, located at 1551 North Thoreau Drive in the northwest Chicago suburb roughly ten miles from O’Hare Airport.

Patricia Foley, Bourse Chairman for the CSNS, said, “This will be our third year for what has proven to be an extremely popular educational initiative for CSNS. Our previous two forums have been especially well attended, with each session attracting an audience of between 40 and 70 attendees. This year we’ll have an especially strong lineup of Civil War researchers with presentations on a broad array of Civil War era related topics. Dennis Boggs, an Abraham Lincoln interpreter, will give two talks. His first presentation, The Significance of the Month of April Throughout the Four Years of the Civil War, will be at 10AM on Friday, April 25 to open the forum. Mr. Boggs will also be our final speaker at 12noon on Saturday, April 26 with Lincoln and the Challenge of 1864. Professor Amy Murrell Taylor, a speaker at our inaugural forum in 2012, will once again be with us at 11AM on Friday for The Civil War After the Civil War: Emancipation and the Long Road to Freedom. Widely published Civil War author Peter Cozzens will give two presentations. His first will be at 12noon on Friday, The 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Mr. Cozzens will also present General John Rawlins – The Brains Behind Grant? At 10AM on Saturday. Lance Herdegen, whose multiple books focus on the history of the Iron Brigade, will speak at 1PM on Friday with Exploits of the Iron Brigade. Robert I Girardi will close out Friday’s programs at 2PM with The Midwest During the Civil War. He will also speak at 11AM Saturday, April 26 on General Impressions of the Civil War.”

Ray Lockwood, Education Director for CSNS, said of the forum, “We certainly won’t be able to make instant experts of our audience, but I do think that we’ll be able to offer an exceptional lineup of respected researchers who at the very least should arouse considerable intellectual curiosity for our attendees and send them home with a thirst for additional knowledge.”

Lockwood was joined by Convention Chairman Kevin Foley, who said, “When Ray and I created the concept of an educational forum not directly related to the numismatic theme of our Anniversary Convention, we did wonder how well it would be received. Our initial doubts have been more than dispelled over the last two years as we’ve seen crowds that have far surpassed audiences at the typical program at past conventions. Two of our speakers, Dennis Boggs and Professor Amy Murrell Taylor, will be popular returnees from previous forums, while our three new speakers, Peter Cozzens, Lance Herdegen and Robert I. Girardi, will bring an impressive list of publishing and research achievements to our Schaumburg convention. For anyone with even a passing interest in the Civil War and issues surrounding this conflict, Schaumburg, Illinois will be the place to be April 25 and 26 for the third edition of our Civil War Educational Forum.
