Coin set captures beauty of Singapore’s Orchids

September 15, 2016 – The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) presents the Splendour of Native Orchids Series coin set, a special set featuring all the orchids featured in the well received 2011 – 2015 Native Orchids of Singapore coin series. The 10 silver proof coins, each bear the design of the same species of orchids from the Native Orchids of Singapore series.

The Splendour of Native Orchids Series Coin Set / Singapore / $1 / Silver .999 / 8.56g / 24.66mm / Mintage: 4,000.

Each orchid is featured in full colour, set against a sandblasted background to accentuate the full brilliance of the orchids. The name of the orchid is minted on the shiny upper circumference of the coin. Each coin has a face value of $1, weighs 8.56 grams and has a diameter of 24.66 mm. Limited to only 4,000 sets worldwide, the obverse of the coins bears the Singapore Coat of Arms with the year 2016.

Minted by The Singapore Mint, the ten orchid species featured are Cymbidium finlaysonianum, Grammatophyllum speciosum, Arundina graminifolia, Bulbophyllum macranthum, Bulbophyllum flabellum-veneris, Dendrobium crumenatum, Phalaenopsis cornu-cervi, Coelogyne rochussenii, Dendrobium leonis and Dendrobium secundum.

This full coin series pays homage to the beauty of over 200 species of orchids that once thrived in Singapore, some of which are still found in our forests today.
