July 11, 2013 – Italy commemorates the 159th anniversary of the birth of Gabriele D’Annunzio (1863-2013), one of its most eminent poets of the 20th century, with a 5 Euro coin.

The obverse shows a bust of Gabriele D’Annunzio in three quarter view facing right; around on the right, REPUBBLICA ITALIANA; below, L. DE SIMONI.
On the reverse a figurehead of the Puglia is displayed, conserved at the Vittoriale (Gardone Riviera, Brescia); behind, branches of laurel; on top IO HO QUEL CHE HO DONATO; on the left 1863 / 5; on the right 2013 / EURO / R; around, on the bottom, GABRIELE D’ANNUNZIO.
The edge is continuously coarse milled.

An intense portrait of Gabriele D’Annunzio, the “Vittoria alata” (winged victory) that adorns the prow of the Nave Puglia of the Vittoriale and his most famous aphorism “Io ho quel che ho donato” (I have what I gave), from the fountain at the entrance of the evocative manor on the Garda lake, these are the figurative elements of the coin dedicated to the great Italian Poet, absolute protagonist of the Italian and European Decadent movement.
