Korean Coin Commemorates Athletics Federations 2011 Championships

September 8, 2011 – The Bank of Korea has issued 50,000 Won coins commemorating the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) Championships hold in Daegu from August 27 to September 4, 2011. Coin specifications are 19 g, .999 fine silver, proof, mintage of 30,000 – with just 3,000 available outside of Korea.

The obverse depicts a dynamic image of a high jumping athlete. The full color official emblem of IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011 on the reverse symbolizes the dynamics of “Colorful Daegu,” with infinite possibilities for the future.

This international event hosts about 6,000 visitors from 212 countries, 2,000 athletes, 1,500 officials, and 2,500 from the media. Previously, the world championships were held 12 times, including 9 times in Europe. Korea is only the third non-European country to host the IAAF competition.
