June 14, 2012 – For the month of May, The Perth Mint issues the final release of the Ships That Changed the World series. In addition the 2012 gilded edition of the Australian Koala silver series has appeared and the series Animal Athletes is continued with the monarch butterfly.

The sovereign is one of the most famous gold coins ever made. Produced with meticulous attention to detail, the 2012 Australian Sovereign is struck from traditional 91.67% pure gold (22-carat) in supreme proof quality. Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, just 2,500 will be released in special presentation packaging.

Brilliant orange and black in colour, the Monarch is among the most easily recognisable of the butterfly species. It is estimated that the Monarch Butterfly can fly over 425 kilometres a day, which is a long way for a creature that is only a few centimetres long! As the second release in the Young Collectors – Animal Athletes series, this coin is sure to impress.

This is only the second time that an Australian Koala coin has been offered in this size, after the success of the 2011 release. The coin features delightful original artistry and is struck from 99.9% pure silver in proof quality.

Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) was born Norma Jeane Mortenson, but baptized Norma Jeane Baker. She was an American actress and model who graced the screen with her luminous beauty. To commemorate the life of Marilyn Monroe, The Perth Mint will release no more than 12,500 1oz 99.9% pure silver coins in proof quality, issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu.

The fifth, and final, release in the charming Ships That Changed The World series features the Cutty Sark. The clipper Cutty Sark was built in 1869 at Dumbarton, Scotland. It was destined for the tea trade, then an intensely competitive race across the globe from China to London. No more than 5,000 of these coins will be released.
