November 6, 2014 – On Saturday 22 November, the 13th Van Gelder-lecture will be held at Teylers Museum (Haarlem, The Netherlands). This year’s lecture – Quo Vadis, NUMIS? – is about the Dutch coin finds database NUMIS. Since the Geldmuseum (Money Museum) had to close its doors on 31 December last year, the further development of NUMIS almost came to a stand-still. The lecturer – Jan Pelsdonk – has been involved in NUMIS and recording coin finds the last fifteen years. For this lecture, he researched the future of the database and possibilities to embed NUMIS better in research done by non-numismatists like historians.
The series of annual lectures is named after Dr. H. Enno van Gelder (1916-1998), the Netherland’s most prolific and influential numismatist of the 20th century. As director of The Royal Coin Cabinet (Koninklijk Penningkabinet, 1949-1980) and also as a professor of numismatics and monetary history in Leiden (1976-1983), he connected numismatics to other disciplines. The lectures are aimed at anyone who wants to approach the subject in a multidisciplinary way and on non-numismatists who want to use the insights numismatics and monetary history provides.
