VAM seminar at Ontario coin show

July 12, 2012 – The SoCal Coin & Currency Show Summer Show will be held July 19-21, 2012 at the Ontario Convention Center, 2000 Convention Center Way, Ontario, CA 91764. The bourse features dealers in US and world coins, currency, stamps and ancients, guest speakers, supplies, exhibits and young numismatist activities.

According to Dawn Napolitan, vice president of operations for CK Shows, the SoCal Coin and Currency Show is “currently the second largest show in California. We are happy to announce ANACS is now accepting submissions onsite at the show all three days. The dealers I’ve talked to say they are excited and plan to bring submissions. Established forty years ago, ANACS is America’s oldest third party coin authentication and grading service.”

Napolitan continues, “The VAM seminar line-up offers a rare opportunity to learn from the industry’s leading experts.Simply put, VAMs are die variations of silver dollars, although to the passionate VAM collector they are much more captivating and border on addiction. Logan McKechnie will be conducting a VAM seminar spotlightingspecial guest speakers Jeff Oxman and Mark Witkower.Oxman is also known as the “Prince of VAMS,” and has penned more books about collecting VAMS than any other writer.”

Numbered among the publications authored or co-authored by Oxman are “The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys”, “The Official Guide to the Top 50 Peace Dollar Varieties”, “Official Guide to the Hot 50 Morgan Dollar Varieties”, “1878 Morgan 8-TF Attribution Guide”, “Carson City Morgan Dollars – Featuring the Coins of the GSA Hoard”, “The 1878 Morgan Dollar 7/8 – TF Attribution Guide.”Witkower and Oxman co-authored the “Official Guide to the 1878 Reverse OF ‘79 Varieties”.
Witkower has been involved in the identification and collection of VAMS for over 20 years. Seminar is held on Saturday, July 21 starting at 12:15pm. Seating is limited.

Presented at the show for young numismatists are two Boy Scout coin collecting merit badge workshops and Fun with Money patch clinic for Girl Scouts. Both sessions are taught by Patti Finner, former American Numismatic Association vice-president, on Friday, July 20 at 4:00pm and Saturday, July 21 at 10:00am. Call 715-445-3468 to preregister.

Dealer set-up and early bird entry is Thursday July 19 from 9 am to 12 noon. Public hours open Thursday at noon and continue to 7pm. Friday hours are 10am to 7 pm, Saturday opens at 10am and the show closes at 5pm.

Free coin planchents will be given to the first 300 attendees per day! Public admission is $3 (for all three days) or a $1 admission coupon is downloadable online. There is free admission for members of any coin or stamp club, seniors 65 or over, military in uniform and children 8 years old or younger. Early bird admission is $25 and exhibitor table fees start at $325.
