Islamic Coins of High Quality at Wilkes & Curtis’ Auction 7

Auction 7 of the UK based numismatic company Wilkes & Curtis is online now and bidding closes from 12 noon BST on Monday 14th September. In total 341 lots are offered including 6 lots of numismatic books.

Highlights of the sale include:

Lot 217: A Fatimid gold Dinar of al-Hakim dated 393h (circa 1003AD) from the Atrablus mint. This is extremely rare because this date is believed unrecorded. The coin is in very fine condition. Estimate £1,000-1,200.

Lot 278: An extremely rare Buwayhid, gold Dinar of ‘Adud al-dawla Abu Shuja‘, struck at Madinat al-Salam in 372h (circa 982AD). It is in very fine condition and believed to be an unrecorded date for a dinar of this mint. Estimate £800-1,000.

Lot 281: Another extremely rare Buwayhid, gold Dinar of Abu Kalijar, dated 424h (circa 1032AD) from the Suq al-Ahwaz mint, in extremely fine condition. The only other recorded example of this date was sold at auction in 1989. Estimate £500-700.

Lot 285 is a silver Ghaznavid Dirham of Mahmud b. Sebuktekin struck at Isfahan in 420h (circa 1029AD). This coin is of the highest rarity as it is believed to be the first published coin struck during a brief period of Ghaznavid rule in Isfahan after they captured the city from the Kakwayhid ruler Muhammad b. Dushmanzar. Estimate £500-700.
